Water Studies

2026

This series uses water as both vessel and portal, a threshold where presence is felt rather than explained. In Jungian psychology, water is the most primal symbol of the unconscious: the reservoir
of our inner life's unknowable depths. This series holds  what cannot be spoken but is always felt.

The series unfolds in two parts. The first depicts water in its literal form, guided by Liu’s darling dog Jupiter, who navigates with ease through emotional waters that are at times stirred, at times calm.
The water's surface acts as a mirror, visualizing the passage of time through the traces of wind and light moving across the water. The second part turns entirely inward, using abstract texture and color as emotional language. Each work flows like emotion itself, without fixed direction, in a state of constant flux that cannot be frozen, yet also serving as reflections upon the water's surface.

Together, the two parts are an invitation to turn inward,  to meet what has been quietly moving beneath the surface, to become aware of what is felt, and to return, however briefly, to the present moment.
